Book Clubs are Coming!

Book Clubs are coming this JANUARY!!!

This January, we will be working in book clubs to come together and chat about books. Each week, you will be responsible for reading the selected chapters and completing your role for the week. The roles will be discussed in January. On Fridays, we will grab a mug of hot chocolate, and chat about books with our book club group. Delicious!
For now, what I need from you is to set about 20 minutes aside to complete the following form. (Once you begin, you can’t save, so you need to start and finish the form in one sitting.) I need you to read each book summary and watch the short video clip. After each book, there is a question to answer. From this, I will do my best to set you in a book club with a book you enjoy. Please be honest with your answers. If you rush through, you may get a book you didn’t really want. It would help if you have a few books you’d be interested in reading.
Enjoy the summaries. Groups and book choices will be announced in January.
Deadline for the form: Friday, Dec. 23 (If you don’t complete the form, a book will be chosen for you.)

Grade 4/5 Social Justice Project News

On Friday, the Grade 5s met to discuss our Social Justice project in support of the Therapeutic Clown Program at CHEO. Earlier in the year, students were asked to submit their ideas on a Google form. From there, we put together some ideas for raising funds and presented them to the students. Each child is now being asked to sign up for a committee that they feel best suits their talents and strengths. Please click on the form ASAP and let us know your preferences. We will be posting the roles in the new year.

Math

We are continuing to work on patterning, and will be moving into Data Management next!

Language

Our authors are hard at work creating Christmas picture books. This unit takes the students through the complete writing process, from drafting ideas, to editing, and finally the publishing process. The final product method is up to the student’s preference. Some are choosing to use Storybird, some Google Slides with their own images and some are creating paper books. What talented, creative students we have in Grade 5.

This week, we will be discussing our January Book Club. Stay tuned for the link of book choices!

Have a great week everyone!

Ottawa 2017

2017 marks Canada’s 150th birthday! Students will have the opportunity to write a postcard to a friend or family member living in Canada. The postcards are stamped and ready to go, all you have to do is write about why this person should come to Ottawa for the celebrations this year. Have fun!

Here is the link to submit your address. Once this is completed, you can start writing on your postcard.

What’s Happening This Week? December 5th – 9th

Hello everyone and Happy Monday!

This week in Language, students will be starting to write their very own Christmas Story, using an online platform called Storybird. They will be completing a story map, writing up their story, following a checklist, and eventually, publishing their story to Storybird.

In Math, we have finished Length and Perimeter and we will be moving on to Patterning. Check the Math tab on the blog to read our learning goals and access practice questions and information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

We were talking as a class last week about having a little Christmas Party, and I think it would be a very nice idea. On Thursday, December 22nd, we will be having a Christmas Party in the afternoon (Block 3 and 4). I would love to set up several stations and have students complete a craft or fun activity. If you would like to join us and help out with the crafts, read a Christmas story, do some baking (nut and egg free), or another activity, let me know. You can sign up by emailing me, or by clicking on the “Volunteer” section of the blog.

ADVENT:

Students will be involved in our school Advent Project to help those in need. Each class will be bringing in items to make Christmas hampers for our friends at St. Elizabeth School. Each student is asked to bring in one can of tuna and if you are able to, a donation of $2.00 for the family would also be greatly appreciated. The donations will go towards the purchase of a grocery gift card for each family.

Students are encouraged to complete a chore at home to earn their donation money so that they experience the gift of giving. We will be collecting the hamper items and donations from Monday, December 5th to Friday, December 16th.
