What’s Happening this Week? October 17th-21st

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend, and I hope you are ready for another great week!

Language: In Language, we are continuing to read “Pax” and everyone (including me) is loving it! We are practicing writing in paragraphs using complete sentences and proper capitalization and grammar. We are also learning more about character traits, mood, tone, and setting.

Math: In Math, we will be reviewing estimating and regrouping. We will be beginning to learn adding and subtracting decimals, and students are encouraged to practice and be reassessed for place value. I will continue to support students with level ones in the classroom, but students also need to ensure they are practicing outside of school for the reassessments.

Science:

  • Grade 4: Continuing to learn about rocks and minerals, and this week, students will be testing minerals.
  • Grade 5: Researching sources of Energy, reviewing the different forms of energy and presenting their research to the class.

The Arts: We will begin exploring Dance by talking about the elements of dance, what dance means to them, and investigating the different types of dance.

NOTE: I wanted to share this document of important information and dates with you as most of the information is important to you and there are important dates. For example, Parent/Teacher interviews will be Thursday, November 10th.

What is happening this week? October 11-14th

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed the weather!

Math: We are beginning addition and subtraction of large numbers, including problem solving tasks. New assignments have been set in Khan Academy for you to get a head start on your learning.
Language: We are continuing with our Global Read Aloud, PAX. Please continue to read each other’s blogs and share your thoughts with well developed comments. We have a great deal of talented writers in our class. Take this opportunities to learn from each other.

(Stay tuned for our Mystery Skype Report. We will be sharing a blog post about our great day. It will be posted later this week.)

Math Test Results

I was very pleased with the overall results of our first Unit Test. The 4 goals are clearly laid out on the rubric.

Students with level 3 or 4 are progressing at grade level. You can continue to build your math proficiency by working through the assignments in Khan Academy and working on the links provided.

If you see level 2, which indicates “approaching grade level”, I recommend you continue to practice these goals. I am willing to reassess you on these goals, if you have continued to practice. Simply complete this form, letting me know what you’ve done to improve and strengthen your skills, and which goal you’d like to have reassessed. Strengthening these concepts are very important to improving your math abilities going forward.

Reassessment Request

If you see Level 1 on any goals, I will continue to work with you, in class. You are encourage to continue to practice at home by watching some Khan Academy videos and working through assignments. Together, we will work to build up your math understanding.

Don’t forget to have the Math Tests signed and return the red duo-tang to school by Friday.

This week:

Thursday – News Show 1pm

Have a great week everyone!

Math Test – Place Value

Hi everyone!

As you may know, our Place Value test is tomorrow! The test will be covering the following:

  • rounding numbers
  • writing numbers in expanded form (700+30+2)
  • writing numbers in standard form (732)
  • writing numbers in word form (seven hundred thirty-two)
  • ordering numbers on a number line or just ordering numbers
  • stating the value of a certain digit (e.g. what is the value of the underlined digit? 6578.3 –> the value of the 5 is 500.)
  • representing numbers using base ten blocks

Here is a great website I just found that has many games that will allow you to practice even more! Click here if you would like to study (which I’m sure all of you do)!

See you tomorrow!
